Baccara has split !!!

Baccara, consisting of Mayte Mateos and Cristina Sevilla, has taken the decision to split! The group will however continue to exist. Mayte Mateos has found herself a new partner to join the new Baccara.

Paloma Blanco will from now on be the new member of Baccara and replaces Cristina Sevilla who ended the Baccara cooperation with Mayte Mateos. The new Baccara will continue bringing the joy of music to all their fans. Baccara participated in the Swedish Melodifestivalen 2004 earlier this year with the song Soy tu Venus, but entered the Eurovision hall of Fame when they competed in the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest. With the song Parlez-vous Français?, they ended 7th representing Luxembourg.

This split isn't the first in the history of Baccara. Back in 1978, Baccara consisted of Mayte Mateos and Maria Mendiola.

Hello Roman.

Yesterday (tuesday) Baccara were on TV! There was a show, that mean "erfolgreichste Duos" and there Baccara was at the 5th place with "Yes sir i can boogie" from 2000 songs, thats great.
And at the end they were performing there live. They sand "Yes sir i can boogie" and "Sorry I`m a lady", it sounds fantastic. And they they are talking with a man and maria was speaking german about the start with baccara, and that other things.

I´m Theresa (13 years) from Germany.

And last Saturday I was in Schwerin in the Moltan Club, and there were BACCARA (Maria and Marissa), too.
They sang 8 beautiful songs. And they have made a fantastic show. And then Marissa sang accapella. It was so beautiful, that me and all the other people came tears in the eyes. Her voice was very lovely, and Maria also had a lovly voice. Then after the show, I could speak with them. They were very nice to me...

And now I have got a question. Can somebody told me, if he or she had the cd " 70`s anos jovenes dias de disco"? Please send me a mail! I´m a big fan, and i want to have this cd, please. Thank you.

They are back!

BACCARA, the cult duo of the 1970s from Spain, is singing again! Mayte Mateos is back with a new partner - and a lot of power! "When I heard Cristina Sevilla sing on the Spanish TV show 'soundmix', I immediately knew: this Is the woman with whom I want to really go for It again", says Mayte.

In the 1970s, Amyte catapulted BACCARA high into the charts with her erotic voice and hits such as Yes Sir, I Can Boogie. Cristlna, herself, had planned to follow in her father's footsteps. But after starting to study medicine, she changed her mind and decided to devote her energy entirely to singing. And she has stuck to this decision for the past seventeen years. When Mayte contacted her, Cristina was immediately enthusiastic about the project. "I had known her songs for so long that I felt I knew her. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind about meeting her at the recording studio", Cristina remembers.

1977 was BACCARA'S year of birth. Mayte Mateos, graduated as a teacher from the "Royal Spanish Academy for Arts, Drama and Dance" in Madrid, was selected to join the Spanish TV's Ballet Company and perform with them for several years. Here she met Maria Mediola. The two of them decided o quit the ballet company and start working independently with their own show program. By accident - or actually more because of a mistake - they got sent to a night club as their first engagement. They sang and danced with all their heart and soul, but a week later they were asked to leave. "Too elegant", was the commentary of the night club owner.

But Mayte and Maria didn't give up, they believed In themselves and in their success. They found a stage for themselves in a five star luxury hotel on the Spanish Island of Fuerteventura. Very soon, their energetic and lively show program had become the absolute highlight of the evening. "But we also performed classic flamenco pieces", Mayte remembers, "since 90 percent of the guests were from Germany. And they loved to see the flamenco pieces." And so did the employee of the RCA record company in Hamburg, now BMG Ariola Hamburg GmbH. He was so fascinated by the show that he spontaneously invited Mayte and Maria to come to Hamburg. Roughly a month later, the two arrived in Hamburg for first rehearsals. An the bosses at RCA were so swept away by their voices that only six days later their single had been recorded.

The song was an immediate hit! All the TV stations wanted to Include BACCARA in their program and do interviews. In just eight weeks, BACCARA had climbed to the top of the German charts. In no time at all, the whole world lay at their feet. This was "Life in the Fast Lane"! From Hongkong to Helsinki, BACCARA collected awards and prizes for top positions in the charts like other people collect stamps. Several albums were recorded, new hits stormed up the charts, hits such as Sorry, I'm A Lady, Darling or The Devil Sent You To Lorado. With the track Parlez-Vous Francais they took part In the Grand Prix d'Eurovlsion for Luxemburg In Paris 1978.

In 1981, Mayte and Maria chose to work with their own soloprojects and the group split up. RCA signed a solo contract with Mayte. But the audience had their Image of BACCARA - a duo, dressed in black and white - and they weren't ready to see that image change. On the other hand, their songs were loved so much that there were lots of engagements for European galas and events booked in the 1990s, at which Mayte performed with another female partner, who will now take on the back-up vocals for the new single. "BACCARA has always been and will be my life", says Mayte. "I simply had to continue."

In eariy 1999, negotiations between BMG and BACCARA 2000 began, the first recording sessions in the Hamburg studios were scheduled for April. "It is a completely crazy thing between Cristina and me. We complement each other perfectly, and Cristina is the perfect partner. Her strong voice supports my singing, as if we were one", Mayte raves. BACCARA 2000 has developed a completely new sound which outshines the sound of the seventies by far.

In March 2004 a new album will be released and a fiew months later an album in Spanish. "We're full of energy and can hardly wait to finally be standing in front of the TV cameras!, says Cristina, who has performed as the lead singer of different Spanish bands herself. "And Mayte has so many tips to offer me, because she has already done this once before and has a lot of experience", she says, smilingly.

Now their journey once again have begun to the top of the international charts. BACCARA have today a lot of fans all over the worid and are constantly performing around the globe. BACCARA performed the song "Soy tu Venus" in 2004 Swedish Eurovlsion Song Contest and even though they didn't make it to the finals. Baccara's performance was a huge success. The song is written by Robert Olausson, Robert Habolin and Mats Jansson.
